It's a classic episode of The Simpsons that could become reality, with George Bush pressing the big red button instead of Mr Burns.

The US government has reportedly asked scientists around the world to investigate the concept of blocking out the sun as a last resort in the fight against global warming.

It certainly seems like something that could only happen in cartoons, but the US says research into giant space mirrors or reflective dust pumped into the atmosphere could be an "important insurance" against climate change, The Guardian reports.

The US is proposing the idea as an attempt to steer an impending United Nations report away from a new worldwide climate treaty based on forcing countries around the world to reduce emissions.

"Modifying solar radiance may be an important strategy if mitigation of emissions fails," a US request says, asking that the idea of interfering with sunlight be included in the next UN report.

"Doing the R&D to estimate the consequences of applying such a strategy is an important insurance that should be taken out. This is a very important possibility that should be considered."

It doesn't appear to be just a case of George Bush watching too many Simpsons episodes. Scientists have previously estimated that by reflecting less than one percent of sunlight back into space, it could compensate for the warming generated by all greenhouse gases emitted since the industrial revolution.

The theory could possibly be put into practice by sending a giant screen into orbit, pumping microscopic sulfate droplets into the atmosphere, or releasing thousands of tiny reflective balloons into the sky.

A draft of the UN report has called such ideas "speculative, uncosted and with potential unknown side-effects."

While the giant sun-blocker might remain animated for the time being, it seems rising emissions could soon force us to turn to Springfield for assistance.

ROTFLMAO Laughing Laughing

It's a bit reminiscent of the "mad scientist" thingie.
Messing around with something they know nothing about.

And all rather pointless if the warming is coming from magma heating
the floor of the oceans as member Shroom has detailed.
